Blogging starts a boomerang effect for organizational change

Internal executive blogging is internal only, obviously. But external executive blogs have major internal effects too. The E-mediator blog talks about the boomerang effect of corporate executive blogging, and it's a discussion worth thinking about for those organisations about to start blogging.

"...external executive blogging is an efficient management change mechanism useful to co-orient organisational members towards new strategic objectives. The feedback loop will mobilize an external force to influence employee sense making which has a different effect on their internalization of the messages from the top. External audiences and media influence provides a powerful force in terms of employee acceptance and strategy elaboration. As they are secondary sources they often twist the change narrative away from corporate language towards more comprehensible sub cultural languages that resonate with employee lifeworlds."

Active blog readers invited to political debate

Later today European Commissioner Margot Wallström will arrange a chat online. That's not new, of course, but the way to choose participants are. For practical reasons, participation is limited to invited guests -- and some of these are "regular commentators" on her blog.

I like that idea. People with views and commitment have through this simple thing called a blog been given the opportunity to have a direct conversation with one of Europe's leading politicians. Sure, we can all have that in e-mails or meetings or even chats. But this is a small step beyond that. These commentators have been "qualified", in a way. Their active participation gives them a platform.

As long as Wallström's staff not only have chosen people that will agree with her, this is one more sign of how blogging changes existing structures -- political, organisational and corporate.

Corporate blog survey

Making a slow start with blogging. Enjoyed doing absolutely nothing productive for a couple of weeks and I like to hang on to that feeling for a while... But for my own archive purposes I want the link to this executive blog survey here. If you read other PR blogs you've already seen it. It says that "83% of the respondents said their blogs were written or drafted by someone else, although they approved the text before it was published. Of the 17%, who said they wrote their own blogs, most said they first asked for advice from HR and communications colleagues."

Soon my accountants will tell me to start making money again, and that'll probably get things going here too ;-)
